Welcome

I am an experienced Integrative Counselling/Psychotherapist spanning over 25 years of experience.

I work with a diverse range of issues and symptoms with both individuals and couples. I mainly specialise in trauma/PTSD and complex trauma, adverse childhood experiences and relationship therapy. I offer an individually tailored approach that best promotes growth, healing and understanding using compassionate mindful observations.

My background to becoming a Therapist

During the late 1980’s to mid 1990’s, I worked as a Lecturer in several Further & Higher Education teaching establishments where I taught Business & Management Studies and Leisure & Tourism & Sports Management. In dealing with some of the emotional needs of students, I developed a keen interest in counselling.

My background as a Therapist

I qualified as a Person-Centred Therapist at Wigan & Leigh College in 1999, working with individuals, many of which presented with relationship issues. At times I wondered what it would be like to have the client’s partner in the room and focus on the dynamic within their relationship. This sparked my curiosity into working with Couples, addressing the dynamics within a couple relationship and looking more broadly at systemic work. I began my training with Relate and practiced at their Blackburn branch from 1999 until 2004. Working with issues such as betrayals of trust, domestic violence, psychosexual issues. communication difficulties, life phases, grief, etc.

Working with both individuals and couples I began to notice a theme emerging within their presenting issues. Many present day concerns seemed to derive from unresolved past traumas or adverse life experiences. This led me to appreciate the power of the subconscious mind. With their permission, I wanted to help clients to find more ways to open doors into the deeper parts of the brain, (the subcortical regions of the brain), and undo what has got stuck in the past that is still being reactivated in the present.

This started another journey. In 2003, I trained in Hypno/ Psychotherapy, integrating talking therapy with Hypno/Psychotherapy. This training further deepened my understanding of the ways in which Hypno/Psychotherapy can be an effective tool for helping to heal unresolved trauma, as it bypasses the conscious mind to address subconscious emotions and feelings directly, re-awakening blocked memories that may have been suppressed by fear or anxiety. I was starting to mindfully look at my client’s presenting issue through the lenses of unprocessed trauma, and in doing so this led me on another journey.

In 2010 and 2011, I trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and became accredited with EMDR UK in 2014. EMDR is a structured form of psychotherapy used to help individuals who have experienced distressing, traumatic events, that are negatively impacting on their quality of life in the here and now. I trained with the EMDR Association (UK), and further developed my training to become an EMDR Europe Consultant Supervisor in 2016. This enables me to supervise EMDR UK trained practitioners.

As part of further developing my skills in this field of trauma in 2017/2018, I undertook training in phases 1, 2 & 3 of Brainspotting. Brainspotting is another psychotherapeutic technique that accesses trauma memories using our field of vision and can be a powerful adjunct to EMDR or used as a stand alone therapy.

With techniques developed from professional training and the development of therapeutic skills, I believe another vital component to the success of therapeutic outcomes is the quality of therapeutic relationship between therapist and client. As such I will endeavour to make you feel relaxed and comfortable enough to explore the issues you bring in confidence and without judgement, at your pace, to build trust between us, and provide sufficient challenge with empathic understanding to enable you tobgain greater insight into your presenting issues. I pride myself on being a reflective practitioner and regularly update my own skills/expertise to not only improve my personal development, but also to enable me to be a more effective practitioner.

Courage doesn’t happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life.
